About BRIGHTCYTE
Last reviewed: · Reviewed by the BRIGHTCYTE technical team
BRIGHTCYTE GmbH is a German security company focused on Hardware-Level Security Intelligence. It develops technology designed to detect suspicious or covert communication that may originate below the operating system, in compromised firmware, BIOS/UEFI code, management engines, peripheral controllers, manipulated components, or hardware implants.
The Security Problem
Most security tools operate inside the operating system. Endpoint agents, antivirus, and network monitoring attribute activity to processes, users, and files. Threats that live below the operating system have none of these anchors, so they can persist through reimaging and communicate through channels that conventional tools were never built to attribute. This is the observable gap BRIGHTCYTE addresses.
Our Technical Focus
BRIGHTCYTE analyzes communication behavior with the specific assumption that the source may be hiding below the operating system. Rather than relying on OS-level telemetry alone, it looks for suspicious patterns and hardware-level context that may indicate a covert channel. You can read more about the underlying concepts on our Hardware-Level Security Intelligence and covert communication pages.
Why the Company Was Founded
BRIGHTCYTE was founded around a clear, observable gap: capable adversaries increasingly move below the operating system, yet the security stack has limited visibility there. The company exists to provide an additional detection signal at that layer, extending visibility where the attribution logic of traditional tools breaks down.
Leadership and Team
BRIGHTCYTE is led by Geschäftsführer Christian Schmidt-Janssen. The founding team combines security leadership, operations, engineering, and commercial expertise, focused on building detection technology for threats below the operating system.
Christian Schmidt-Janssen
Chief Executive Officer
Christian leads BRIGHTCYTE's strategy and brings long-standing experience in cybersecurity, information security, governance, and international risk management. As Chief Information Security Officer at KARL STORZ, he was responsible for the global information and cybersecurity strategy, governance, and security risk management across medical devices, software products, and IT infrastructure, steering security initiatives for more than 60 companies worldwide. Before that, he led the Cyber Security Competence Center at Schindler, with global responsibility for the cybersecurity of digital products, IT and IoT risk management, mobile security, and secure ICT architectures. He also served on the DIN NIA board, contributing to international standards for information and cybersecurity, and holds ISO 27001 Lead Auditor, CISM, and CISSP certifications.
Jennifer Roller
Chief Operating Officer
Jennifer runs BRIGHTCYTE's operations and combines cybersecurity expertise with experience in governance, process design, risk management, and organizational development. She currently serves as CISO at KARL STORZ, bringing first-hand knowledge of information security, leadership, and scaling in an internationally regulated, security-critical environment. At Schindler Digital Innovation she played a key role in building the Cyber Security Competence Center, deriving the cybersecurity strategy from the corporate strategy and developing processes, responsibilities, standards, and KPI-based steering. Earlier, she worked in information security at the Volkswagen Group Future Center Europe on SIEM, ISO 27001 ISMS, audits, and threat assessments. Her master's thesis on rootkit detection laid the technical foundation for the idea behind BRIGHTCYTE.
Christian Haß
Chief Technology Officer
Christian is responsible for BRIGHTCYTE's technology architecture and implementation. His profile combines IT security, software architecture, embedded development, cloud technologies, data mining, and operations research. At secunet Security Networks AG, the official security partner of the Federal Republic of Germany, he designed and implemented security-critical solutions for authentication, authorization, qualified signatures, eID functions, and secure mobile communication, including work on SINA Mobile and the analysis of network traffic on Android devices. He also brings broad startup and product experience: as founder of BeyondVision he has supported companies since 2003 with digitalization and custom software, and he contributed as founder and software architect at Foodplaza and PixelYourMind, taking products from concept and prototype to market.
Daniel Busch
Chief Commercial Officer
Daniel drives BRIGHTCYTE's commercial development and brings long-standing experience from developing and bringing cutting edge IT and cybersecurity solutions to market. His profile combines strategic enterprise sales, technical consulting, channel enablement, and a strong network in the DACH region, particularly toward the public sector, DAX and Fortune 500 companies, tier-1 telcos, and security-critical organizations. Earning his spurs in IBM, he has built go-to-market strategies for specialized security products for organisations like Secunia, NSS Labs, IOActive, and a cybersecurity company he co-founded, where he was responsible for business development, sales strategy, partnerships, and market entries. As an experienced co-founder he knows how to create sustainable market access for security products and services. His leadership of a team building a successful SaaS security product underscores his high focus on excellence.
Research and Engineering Approach
Our work is evidence-based. We ground detection design in documented attack techniques and public research on firmware and hardware-level threats, and we describe capabilities in measured terms. Detection at this layer provides an additional signal, and it is designed to surface suspicious behavior rather than to guarantee that every compromise is found.
